ECGT: The new EU Directive changes the rules. Are you ready?
Empowering consumers for the Green Transition vs. Greenwashing

Imagine you're trying to make a sustainable choice: you buy a product labeled “eco-friendly,” “green,” or “nature-friendly.” But… is it really? Too often, those labels come with no real proof behind them. That’s why the European Union decided to take action.

On March 5, 2024, a new directive was published—Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition—designed to put an end to the era of vague and misleading environmental claims. The goal? To protect consumers from falsely “green” messages and give visibility only to those who can back up their impact on the environment or society with real data.
What’s changing (and what It means for businesses)
Under this new law, companies can no longer use claims like “biodegradable” or “sustainable” unless they can clearly and verifiably prove them. Fake certifications or unchecked self-declarations will no longer be allowed. It will also be illegal to say a product is “carbon neutral” just because carbon credits were purchased, unless there's a serious, transparent plan behind it.

In short, it’s time to move from talk to action. And those who can’t prove the positive impact of what they do could face penalties.
When does It take effect?
The directive officially came into force on March 26, 2024, but EU member states have until September 27, 2026 to fully implement it. That means there's still time to prepare—but the time to start is now.
